Generation Africa is a pan-African youth initiative founded in 2019 to inspire and nurture young entrepreneurs in Africa’s agri-food sector. One of its flagship activities, the annual $100k GoGettaz Agripreneur Prize Competition, just announced two grand prize winners last week in Rwanda at the Africa Green Revolution Forum (virtual) Summit. Building on the success of this annual event, today Generation Africa is proud to announce the launch of a new platform, the GoGettaz Africa Community Platform (GACP), an online platform designed to connect Africa’s aspiring young “agripreneurs” with the network, online learning tools, mentorship, business development services, and capital they need to grow their ideas and start-ups into profitable agribusinesses across the value chain from “seed to fork”.
Hosted by VC4A, a well-known international platform providing support to start-ups, the GoGettaz Africa Community Platform was designed by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs searching for an online network and ecosystem of support as they work to transform their innovative ideas into sustainable, profitable and scalable businesses.
According to Dickson Naftali, Head of Generation Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya, “Competitions like the GoGettaz Agripreneur Prize are an amazing way to discover new talent and give young entrepreneurs an opportunity to shine and hone their skills on stage, but a real ecosystem of support is needed to help them transform their young businesses, especially in challenging times like these”.
“Entrepreneurship can be a lonely road, especially in the early days,” he said. “The online GoGettaz Africa Community Platform is meant to fill that gap”.
The GoGettaz Africa Community Platform (GACP) is open to both current and aspiring entrepreneurs who are in the business of transforming Africa’s agrifood sector. The GACP is integrated into VC4A’s existing platform of entrepreneurs, investors and mentors – leveraging opportunities, network and learning resources built up over the past decade. “I am really excited to see the GoGettaz Africa Community Platform become a reality. There are so many young people with amazing ideas on how to transform the food system but do not know where to start. The GoGettaz Africa Community Platform will provide all the required resources and information that one needs to grow from ideation to maturity.” says Amanda Namayi, GoGettaz Africa Lead.
With its focus to harness the dynamism of youth entrepreneurship in the agrifood sector, Generation Africa aims to build the largest online support network and community of agripreneurs on the African continent. In combination with strong social media networks, the vision of GACP is to enable Generation Africa’s co-founding and technical partners — Yara, Econet, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, Corteva AgriScience, Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture and USAID — to more effectively support the aspirations of young entrepreneurs across Africa, not only to launch businesses to feed their own families and nations, but eventually to become unicorns who help feed the world.
About Generation Africa Generation Africa is the partnership initiative with a vision to strengthen the ecosystem for youth entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector across the continent. Founding partners are Econet, an international technology group founded on the African continent, and Yara International, a global crop nutrition company, founded in Norway.
